The oldest known bass drum pedal is attributed to the Englishman Cornelius Ward around 1850. A first patent was registered in the United States in 1887 by R.G Olney.
Hundreds of patents attest to the interest of engineers in this simple, but crucial accessory. The first really functional bass drum pedal that allows to play with velocity is registered by Ludwig in the United States with the patent of February 8th 1909. Different systems of driving the drum by strap, chain or direct drive are proposed. The bass drum pedal is still the object of research and development, especially for double pedals.
